Russia claims its new hypersonic weapon is ready for war
- Russia’s defense minister on Friday declared a new hypersonic weapon capable of striking the United States is ready for war.
- The hypersonic glide vehicle, dubbed Avangard, which Moscow has been developing for three decades, is designed to sit atop an intercontinental ballistic missile.
- As it stands, the U.S. does not have a defense against hypersonic weapons, which can travel at least five times the speed of sound, or a little more than a mile per second.

The Kinzhal missile is said to travel at ten times the speed of sound and has a range of 2,000 kms.
President Vladimir Putin, in his State of the Nation speech earlier this month, described the Kinzhal missile, as “an ideal weapon”.
Mr Putin says it’s part of a new stockpile of invincible weapons.
He says the missile was developed as a response to the US withdrawal from the Anti Ballistic Missile treaty in 2002.
The missile launch comes as Russia’s presidential elections next weekend, are set to return Putin for a fourth term.

(MOSCOW) — President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Russia has got a strong edge in designing new weapons and that it has become the only country in the world to deploy hypersonic weapons.
Speaking at a meeting with top military brass, Putin said that for the first time in history Russia is now leading the world in developing an entire new class of weapons unlike in the past when it was catching up with the United States.
The Russian leader noted that during Cold War times, the Soviet Union was behind the United States in designing the atomic bomb and building strategic bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles.
“Now we have a situation that is unique in modern history when they are trying to catch up to us,” he said. “Not a single country has hypersonic weapons, let alone hypersonic weapons of intercontinental range.”
The Pentagon and the U.S. military services have been working on the development of hypersonic weapons in recent years, and Defense Secretary Mark Esper said in August that he believes “it’s probably a matter of a couple of years” before the U.S. has one. He has called it a priority as the military works to develop new long-range fire capabilities.

A new hypersonic missile that can fly 27 times the speed of sound has entered service Friday, Russia’s defense minister reported to President Vladimir Putin.
Called the Avangard, the intercontinental ballistic missile has the capacity to make maneuvers in the atmosphere. This means it is much harder to intercept.

The Avangard is built to withstand temperatures of up to 2,000 Celsius (3,632 Fahrenheit) and carries a nuclear weapon of up to 2 megatons. Russian media have been reporting that the Avangard will first be mounted on Soviet-built RS-18B intercontinental ballistic missiles.

A Russian weapon the U.S. is currently unable to defend against will be ready for war by 2020, according to sources with direct knowledge of American intelligence reports.
The sources, who spoke to CNBC on the condition of anonymity, said Russia successfully tested the weapon, which could carry a nuclear warhead, twice in 2016. The third known test of the device, called a hypersonic glide vehicle, was carried out in October 2017 and resulted in a failure when the platform crashed seconds before striking its target.
The latest revelations come more than two months after Russian President Vladimir Putin touted his nation’s growing hypersonic arsenal as “invincible.”
The hypersonic glide vehicle, dubbed Avangard, is designed to sit atop an intercontinental ballistic missile. Once launched, it uses aerodynamic forces to sail on top of the atmosphere.
One U.S. intelligence report, according to a source, noted that the hypersonic glide vehicles were mounted to Russian-made SS-19 intercontinental ballistic missiles — and one test featured a mock warhead.
Devastation even without explosives
While it is unclear whether Avangard will be outfitted with explosives, the precision and speed of the weapon is believed to pack enough force to obliterate targets.
The weapon, which Moscow has been developing for three decades, can travel at least five times the speed of sound, or about one mile per second.
“These kinds of boost glide vehicles attack the gaps in our missile defense system,” Thomas Karako, director of the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told CNBC.
